The turning point is when they work together to call for help, but they end up attracting the wolves.
How does the Protagonist change over the course of the story? They both change because they end up becoming friends, when before, they were mortal enemies.
Describe the relationship between the title and the theme. The theme of the story is how the fight is unreasonable and irrational, and an interloper is a person that is involved in something that they don't belong in, or have no reason to be. Basically, the title is a metaphor for the two men fighting for no reason.
How does the main conflict help to illustrate the theme?
They come face to face with weapons, ready to shoot, when a tree falls on them. If they weren't fighting over nothing, then they wouldn't be there at that spot, at that time.
How does the climax help to illustrate the theme? They call out for their men, but end up attracting the wolves, and it shows that there are consequences to fighting and hating for no reason.
Give examples of each of the following literary terms in the story (use quotes):
Simile: "If my men are the first to come you shall be the first to be helped, as though you were my guest."
Metaphor: "All around them lay a think-strewn wreckage of splintered branches and broken twigs." This kind of represents a border and boundary that they are trappen in.
Personification: "...with the wind tearing in fitful gusts through the naked branches."
Symbol: "'...who are they?'" asked Georg quickly, training his eyes to see what the other would gladly not have seen. 'Wolves.'" The wolves symbolized their death.
Foreshadowing (give both elements):
"The roebuck, which usually kept in the sheltered hollows during a storm-wind, were running like driven things tonight, and there was movement and unrest among the creatures that were wont to sleep through the dark hours. Assuredly there was a disturbing element in the forest..." pg.190
That quote might hint to the readers that there's an animal in the forrest thats usually not there. In the end, the two men meet their fate, and find out which animal has the animals anxious.
"...he stepped around the trunk of a huge beech he..."
pg. 190
The quote shows that there are already trees falling down, then, one ends up falling on top of them.
Irony: They finally resolve generations of family feud, but they get eaten by wolves, so no one will know that they are no longer enemies. "...we can try. Together, then" This quote shows that they are working together, finally, but the yelling eventually attracted the wolves. It is dramatic irony because the readers will know that they ended their quarrel, but the actual people in the story will never know... unless they get to Ulrich and Georg before the wolves do.
Imagery: "...in ambush on the crest of the hill, and wandered far down the steep slopes amid the wild tangle of undergrowth, peering through the tree-trunks and listening through the whistling and skirling of the wind and the restless beating of the branches for sight or sound of the marauders. If only on this wild night, in this dark, lone spot.." pg.190
Describe the relationships between the class theme and the story. The class theme is choices, and this theme is how sometimes people fight and hate for no reason and really no understanding of why they do. It is their choices not to try to resolve the problem, and it is also your choice to hate and feel so much dislike for the person, but it can also be your choice to let go of your differences. If your friend was talking bad things about a person, and you met that person, you would probably already have an opinion about them, just off of what your friend told you. It would be your choice to keep an open mind, and get to know them, or hate them just because your friend does. I am not saying that my first impression would not be influenced because of what my friend had said, but I always like to keep an open mind about people, and not think about what other people tell me because I'm not them. I am my own person, and the choices I make should not be greatly influenced from other people's opinion and experiences.
1. What is Ulrich hunting for? Georg and his men. 2. How did Ulrich come to own the property in question? A lawsuit, that took it from Georg's family because it was illegally possessed. 3. Why do Ulrich and Georg hate each other? How did it all start? They hate each other because their both their family's have been hating on each other for generations, and they want to carry on the personal hate like people carry on family heirlooms. It all started because Ulrich's family took Georg's family's land. 4. Identify the foreshadowing in the second paragraph. The forrest was on it's toes because a disturbing element was in the forrest. That foreshadowed the wolves. 5. Why did they not try to shoot each other the moment they saw each other? They were brought up to respect to code of civilization, and plain out shooting the other man was defying the code. 6. What saves Ulrich’s feet from being crushed? His heavy shooting boots stopped his feet from being crushed by the tree. 7. What lies do they tell each other after realizing they are both trapped under the tree? That their men are following close behind, and how soon they will come and resque one and kill the other. 8. Why does Ulrich change his mind about killing Georg? He started to pity Georg because he looked in a lot of pain. He also realizes that they've been fools to fight over land, where nothing can even grow in it anyways. 9. What significance is there in the title of this story? What are some possible meanings of the title? Well, an interloper is someone who doesn't belong and these two people have no belonging in this quarrel. Just because they were just born in the family, does not mean that they have to carry on the hatred. The interloper can be literal beacuse Georg is interloping in Ulrich's land. It can also be spiritual because it can represent that they are not supposed to be hating each other for no reason, other than that both their families hated each other. 10. In the end of the story why do each of the men hope that their men will come first to rescue him? The person whos men come first will show: "...honerable attention to the enemy that had become a friend." 11. Describe the irony in this story. They finally resolve their issues, but no one will know because it is assumed that they are eaten by wolves. 12. What metaphor can you find in relation to the tree pinning down the two characters? The tree traps them, and forces them to talk and relate to each other. They both realize that the other person isn't all that bad. It's a metaphor for containment, and forcing them to work together. 13. Is the ending of this story effective? Why or why not? It really leaves the reader to make an assumption on what will happen, which sometimes works really well with the story, and in this case, it does.===== Completion5 /5 Effort 4/5 Content 4/5
